What Is Backlight Bleed?

Backlight bleed is light from an LCD backlight leaking around the edges of the panel, so dark images show brighter patches along the edges or in the corners. It is easiest to see on a black screen in a dark room, which is exactly what this test shows.

Liquid crystals do not make light. An LCD screen has a backlight behind the panel, and the liquid crystal layer blocks or passes that light to form the picture. To show black, the panel has to block nearly all of it. Around the edges, where the panel sits in its frame, uneven pressure and small gaps let some light slip past. The result is a glow that has nothing to do with the image on screen.

Because the leak is constant, it barely shows in bright content and stands out in dark scenes: films with black bars, space games, night shots and dark mode. OLED screens cannot have backlight bleed, because each pixel makes its own light and there is no backlight to leak. Mini LED screens still have a backlight, so they can show bleed as well as blooming around bright objects.

Backlight Bleed

Bright patches fixed to the edges and corners. They stay in the same place and shape whatever angle you view from.

IPS Glow

A silvery or warm sheen in the corners of IPS panels that shifts or fades when you move your head. Normal for the panel type.

Clouding

Soft, blotchy patches across the middle of a dark screen. Most common on edge-lit LCD TVs and large monitors.

How To Test For Backlight Bleed In 6 Steps

The room and the brightness setting matter as much as the pattern. Set them up first, then the test takes about three minutes.

  1. Darken The Room

Turn off the lights and close the curtains. A little light hides bleed and a dark room shows it honestly.

  2. Set Your Brightness

Use the brightness you normally watch at. You will repeat the test at 100% later for the worst case.

  3. Sit Where You Watch

Wipe the screen and sit straight on at your normal distance. Viewing from an angle adds IPS glow.

  4. Run Pure Black Full Screen

Press Full Screen Test and wait about a minute so your eyes adjust to the dark.

  5. Rate Each Zone

Turn on Rate and tap any glowing edge or corner. Move your head first: if the glow shifts, it is IPS glow.

  6. Repeat And Save

Check 5% grey and Letterbox, then 100% brightness. Download the report if you plan a return.

Backlight Bleed Vs IPS Glow Vs Clouding

Several different effects look alike on a black screen. The quickest way to tell them apart is to move your head and watch what happens.

How Much Backlight Bleed Is Normal?

There is no single industry standard for backlight bleed, and most brands do not publish a limit. These four levels match the ratings in the tool.

None

Edges look as dark as the center, even on pure black in a dark room.

Keep the screen

Slight

Faint glow only on pure black in a dark room. Common on LCD panels and hidden in normal use.

Usually within normal

Noticeable

Visible on dark scenes and letterbox bars at your normal brightness, not just on the test pattern.

Check your return window

Severe

Bright beams or patches that show in films and games even with some room light on.

Return or claim

A fair benchmark: judge at your normal brightness, in the room you use, from your usual seat. If bleed only appears on pure black with every light off, most people never see it during real viewing.

Why Bleed Looks Worse In Photos

A photo is useful evidence for a return, but only if it shows what your eyes see.

Cameras Brighten The Dark

Phone cameras raise exposure automatically on a black screen, so faint bleed turns into bright beams in the photo.

Lower The Exposure

Tap the screen in your camera app and drag exposure down until the photo matches what you see in the room.

Shoot Straight On

Hold the phone level with the center of the screen at your seating distance. An angled shot adds IPS glow.

Add Your Report

Send the photo with the downloaded report, which lists the resolution, the zones you rated and the brightness you tested at.

Can Backlight Bleed Be Fixed?

Bleed is part of how the panel was assembled, so there is no software fix. You can make it less visible, or swap the screen.

Lower The Brightness

Less backlight means less light to leak. Many people run monitors brighter than they need in a dim room.

Add Soft Room Light

A lamp or a bias light behind the screen lowers the contrast between the panel and the room, so edge glow stands out less.

Exchange In The Return Window

Bleed varies from unit to unit, so a replacement can be better. Test the new one the same way before you keep it.

Full monitor test

Skip Screws And Pressure

Loosening bezel screws or pressing the panel edge is widely suggested online. It can crack the panel, add new bleed and void the warranty.

Backlight Bleed On Monitors, Laptops, TVs And Phones

The test works the same everywhere, but each device has its own weak spots.

Monitors

IPS monitors show both glow and bleed, so the head-movement check matters most here. VA panels have less glow but can show clouding.

Monitor test

Laptops

The thin lid flexes, so bleed often appears along the bottom edge near the hinge. Test with the lid at your usual angle.

Laptop test

TVs

Edge-lit LCD TVs are the most prone to bleed and clouding. Open this page in the TV browser and use the Letterbox pattern.

TV test

Phones

Most current flagship phones use OLED, which has no backlight bleed. Budget LCD phones can still show glow around the edges.

Backlight Bleed Test FAQ

Answers to what people ask most when checking a new screen for light leaks.

What is a backlight bleed test?

A backlight bleed test fills your screen with black and very dark grey so light leaking around the edges of an LCD panel becomes easy to see. You view it full screen in a dark room and look for bright patches along the edges and in the corners.

How do I test my monitor for backlight bleed?

Darken the room, set your usual brightness, open the black pattern full screen and give your eyes about a minute to adjust. Look at each edge and corner from your normal seat, then repeat on the 5% grey and letterbox patterns and at 100% brightness.

What is the difference between backlight bleed and IPS glow?

IPS glow changes when you move your head or step back, while backlight bleed stays in the same place and keeps the same shape. Glow is a normal trait of IPS panels; bleed comes from light leaking past the panel edges.

How much backlight bleed is normal?

There is no single industry standard, and most brands do not publish a limit. Faint glow that you only notice on a black screen in a dark room is common on LCDs. Bleed you can see during films, dark games or letterboxed video at normal brightness is worth raising with the seller.

Can backlight bleed be fixed?

Not reliably at home. Lowering brightness and adding soft light behind the screen make it less visible. Loosening screws or pressing on the panel is often suggested online, but it can damage the screen and void the warranty. An exchange inside the return window is the safest fix.

Does backlight bleed get worse over time?

It can change. Some owners report bleed easing slightly in the first weeks, others see it get worse with heat or pressure on the frame. There is no reliable pattern, so judge the screen while you can still return it.

Do OLED screens have backlight bleed?

No. OLED pixels make their own light, so there is no backlight to leak. OLED screens can show other issues, such as uneven near-black shades or burn-in, which the OLED screen test covers.

Is backlight bleed covered by warranty?

It depends on the brand and how severe it is. Many manufacturers treat slight bleed as normal for LCD panels, while strong bleed can qualify for a repair or replacement. Save your test report and an accurate photo before you contact them.

Why does backlight bleed look worse in photos?

Phone cameras raise exposure automatically in the dark, which makes faint bleed look bright and dramatic. Lower the exposure until the photo matches what your eyes see, or the photo will overstate the problem.

What brightness should I use for the test?

Start at the brightness you normally use, because that is how you will see the screen every day. Then raise it to 100% to see the worst case. Judge mainly at your normal setting.
