What Is A Black Screen Tool?

A black screen tool fills your whole display with pure black, color code #000000, with no browser bars, cursor or controls in the way. It turns any screen into a blank, dark surface for testing, cleaning, saving power or simply darkening a room.

Pure black sets every red, green and blue sub-pixel to its lowest level. What happens next depends on the screen. On an OLED or AMOLED display, those pixels switch off completely, so the screen looks like it is turned off and uses almost no power. On an LCD, the backlight stays on behind the panel and a little light always gets through, so black looks very dark grey, and any light leaking at the edges becomes easy to see.

That difference is what makes a black screen useful. A pixel that should be off but still glows stands out instantly, light leaking around the frame shows up clearly, and dust and fingerprints are easy to spot on a dark, reflective surface. The near-black and night shades on this page cover the cases where pure black is too strong.

Pure Black

#000000. Every sub-pixel at its lowest level. The standard for pixel, bleed and battery checks.

Near Black

2% and 10% grey. Shows near-black detail, OLED banding and LCD clouding.

Night Red

A deep, dim red. Gives a faint glow for finding your way in the dark without bright white light.

8 Ways To Use A Black Screen

A plain black screen does more than it looks. These are the most common reasons people open one.

Find Stuck Pixels

Stuck pixels show as red, green or blue dots, and hot pixels as white dots, on pure black.

Dead pixel test

Check Backlight Bleed

In a dark room, light leaking around the edges of an LCD shows as bright patches.

Bleed test

Clean Your Screen

Dust, streaks and fingerprints stand out on a dark, reflective surface, so you can see what to wipe.

Save OLED Battery

On OLED and AMOLED phones and laptops, black pixels are off and use almost no power.

Darken The Room

Keep a device on without its light, for sleeping, films or a dim night clock on the bedside table.

Hide Your Screen

Blank a second monitor or a presentation screen during a break without turning anything off.

Judge Black Level

See how deep your screen's black really is and how much it glows at your brightness setting.

  3. Add Options

Does A Black Screen Save Battery?

On OLED and AMOLED screens, yes: black pixels are switched off and use almost no power. On LCD screens, barely, because the backlight stays on whatever the panel shows. That is why dark mode saves noticeable battery on OLED phones but very little on LCD laptops.

OLED Phones And Laptops

Each pixel makes its own light, so a black screen is close to having the display off while staying awake.

LCD Screens

The backlight lights the whole panel, so power use barely changes. Lowering brightness saves far more.

Brightness Still Matters

On any screen, the clock overlay and near-black shades light some pixels. Keep the clock level low for the best saving.

Off Is Still Best

If you do not need the device awake, turning the screen off or letting it sleep saves more than any black page.

Black Screen On Monitors, Laptops, TVs And Phones

The page works in any modern browser. A few devices need a small extra step.

Monitors

Drag the window to the monitor you want before pressing Full Screen. Each monitor can show its own black page.

Laptops

Turn on Keep Screen Awake if your laptop dims or sleeps quickly on battery.

Laptop test

TVs

Open the page in the TV browser and use the remote to select Full Screen. Turn off any eco or ambient light sensor first.

Phones

Android browsers go full screen. On iPhone, the page fills the browser window, and adding it to the home screen hides the bars.

Black Screen FAQ

Answers to what people ask most about using a full screen black page.

What is a black screen?

A black screen is a page that fills your display with pure black, color code #000000. It is used to check for stuck and hot pixels, spot backlight bleed, clean the screen, save battery on OLED displays and darken a room without turning the device off.

How do I make my screen completely black?

Press Full Screen on this page, or press F on a keyboard. The browser bars disappear and the whole display turns black. Move the mouse or tap to bring back the control bar, and press Esc to exit.

What is the color code for pure black?

Pure black is #000000 in hex, or 0, 0, 0 in RGB. Every red, green and blue sub-pixel is set to its lowest level. This page uses exactly that value for the Pure Black shade.

Does a black screen save battery?

On OLED and AMOLED screens, yes. Black pixels are switched off and use almost no power. On LCD screens the backlight stays on behind the panel, so a black screen saves very little.

Can a black screen damage my display?

No. Showing black is one of the gentlest things a screen can do. On OLED, black pixels are off and do not wear at all. On LCD, the backlight runs as normal, the same as any other image.

Why does my black screen look grey?

On an LCD, some backlight always passes through the panel, so black looks dark grey, especially in a dark room or at high brightness. IPS panels show this more than VA panels. OLED screens show true black because their pixels turn off.

How do I find stuck pixels with a black screen?

Open Pure Black full screen in a dim room and look slowly across the whole display. A stuck pixel shows as a red, green or blue dot, and a hot pixel as a white dot. Use the Dead Pixel Test to log its position.

How do I exit the black screen?

Press Esc on a keyboard. On a touch screen, tap once to show the control bar and press the X button. The F key also switches full screen on and off.

Will my screen turn off while the black screen is open?

It may, depending on your sleep settings. Turn on Keep Screen Awake in the options, which asks the browser to stop the screen from sleeping while this page is open. It works in most modern browsers.

Can I use the black screen on an iPhone?

Yes. On iPhone, Safari does not allow web pages to go fully full screen, so the black screen fills the browser window instead. Scroll slightly to hide the toolbars, or add the page to your home screen for a cleaner view.

Ready For A Pure Black Screen?

One click and your whole display turns #000000.
